Okay, so I've created a budget and I'm fairly confident in my ability to do so. But, I'm not good at sticking with the budget. How do I create a user-friendly budget that works for my situation? What factors should I consider when making it specific for my needs?
The biggest factors you need to consider when establishing your budget are:
Your realistic income each moth Your realistic monthly expenses, and Your motives and mindset.
If you don't use realistic income and expenses it's mathematically impossible to stick to your plan. However, the biggest problem for most people is their motives and mindset. If your motivation for budgeting is external (pleasing your spouse, satisfying creditors, etc) you will always feel like you are making sacrifices and will overspend...sometimes out of rebellion.
Ask yourself why you are using a budget in the first place. What will you do with the money you save? What is your goal? And most importantly; "Why do you want to achieve that goal?"
Remember a budget is supposed to help you control wasteful spending and enable you to create savings. Once you have accumulated some savings you can then think about how and where you want to invest that money. If you invest it wisely you can genereate recurring passive income, which means you won't always have to trade your time for money. At that point you have a regular income you don't have to work for each day and you have time to do what you want. That is when you have true financial freedom.
So spend some time contemplating "why" you want to control expenses and save money. What's in it for you? If your "why" is strong enough, you will find it easier to determine the "how."
